Watch| Trump's '2028 Hat' Sparks Debate Over Potential Third Term

On Thursday, the "Trump 2028" cap, which costs $50, as well as a "Trump 2028" shirt ($36) and other allied merchandise, went on sale on the president's official website.

President Donald Trump has recently shown the legendary "Trump 2028" hat in the White House, generating new rumors regarding a possible third attempt at the presidency. He showed the hat to a number of House officials and MAGA activist Laura Loomer, setting off further discussion.

On Thursday, the "Trump 2028" cap, which costs $50, as well as a "Trump 2028" shirt ($36) and other allied merchandise, went on sale on the president's official website. The rollout of these items has revived debates about whether Trump could run, or even reinterpret, the 22nd Amendment.

The 22nd Amendment, enacted in 1951, specifically reads, "No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice." As Trump has already had two terms—being elected in 2016 and 2024—he is barred by the Constitution from running once again in 2028.

In a March interview with NBC News, Trump said, "A lot of people want me to do it.". But, I mean, I essentially inform them we have a long way to go, you know, it's very early in the administration." Asked whether he will seek another term, he replied, "I like working." He went on, "I'm not joking. But I'm — it is far too early to think about it," before adding, "There are methods which you could do it."

At a Republican fundraiser after beating former Vice President Kamala Harris in November, Trump suggested, "I think I won't be running again, unless you say, 'He's so good we've got to come up with something else.'

Even at a May 2024 speech at the National Rifle Association, Trump playfully asked, "I don't know, are we going to be three-term or two-term? Are we three-term or two-term if we win?"

When questions about the product were posed, the White House referred them to the Trump Organization. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt replied to NBC News, stating, "But it's a cool hat and I suspect it will be highly popular!"
